When is Father’s Day?
In Ireland, and in many other countries around the world, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. This means that Father’s Day falls on Sunday 16 June in 2024, and on Sunday 15 June in 2025.
Father's Day origin
Father's Day originated in the US and was first celebrated in 1910, initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd. She came up with the idea while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.Unlike Mother’s Day, which is traditionally known as ‘Mothering Sunday’, the idea behind Father’s Day is a lot more modern. It also took a lot longer to become a widespread tradition on this side of the Atlantic. Father's Day has been celebrated in Ireland since sometime after the Second World War.
